Opening the concert this Sunday is the piece, Marco Polo, The Silk Road which describes five episodes from the fantastic trip that Marco Polo made to the biggest empire that ever existed on Earth - the court of Kublai Khan, Emperor of the Mongolians.
The composer, Luis Serrano Alarcón found his inspiration amongst others, in the book "The Travels of Marco Polo", that was dictated by Marco Polo himself, to Rustichello, a romance writer, while they were both in prison in Genoa in 1298.
